How would you spend your time, if you had ALL the money?

I think that’s a trickier question than it looks, personally.

It’s hard to imagine a world in which absolutely everything is possible, isn’t it?  Having endless options to choose from – or even to create for yourself – can send your brain into a whirly fizz.

That’s why, when asked what they’d do if they won the lottery, most people mumble something about taking a long holiday, or paying off the mortgage.

(Kudos to my stepdad, who thought about that question for a split-second, then said he’d employ Bono as his emergency post-curry bottom-wiper).

When you consider a change of career, questions like these pop up all the time.  I switched from HR to writing in 2016, but before then I was confused about what on Earth else I could do well enough to earn from.

At that point I’d been working in HR for 15 years, so again, imagining a world in which absolutely any career was possible felt alien.

“Just think about what you’d do if money wasn’t an issue,” people kept saying.  Unhelpfully really, because the thing is: money has never not been an issue.

But I did think about it, and here are a few of the things I’d do if I had ALL the money.

Start a recruitment agency especially for mid-life career-changers

Why do so many people think you can only learn new things if you’re young?  Or that you should stick with a career you chose back when you were an entirely different person?

Mid-lifers have so much to offer.  In an ideal world, I’d help them offer it.

Open an animal sanctuary

I’m not sure this needs much explanation, over “we don’t deserve animals”.

Write CVs for people who need a genuine boost of confidence

During my short stint as a recruitment consultant way back when, I’d regularly get told off for spending too much time chatting with job-seekers.

I did this because a lot of them were fantastic people who had no confidence whatsoever.  Some had been unemployed for a long while, or they were going back to work after bringing up the kids.

Lots of people just need a boost to be brilliant.

And in a world where I had ALL the money, they’d get one on paper.

Mentor budding writers

I love helping people write what they’ve always wanted to write.

When they realise that actually, they can make sense of their ideas, AND write them in a way that others ‘get’, it’s a bit magical.

That magical feeling is basically why I started the Wondrous Writing Hub.

I do have to charge for it.  I’ve got a mortgage, and that’s the way the world works.

But I think it’s nice to know that when you sign up for a course, the person running it actually enjoys it…

…to the extent that even if they had ALL the money, they’d still want to work with you.

And I would.
