Show review: The Girl on the Train
07 May 2025
I didn’t stay to the end of The Girl on the Train, because it was a total smokeshow. Not in the ‘slang for attractive’ sense. I mean it was literally a total smokeshow. There was so much smoke coming from that stage that my eyes started streaming and I couldn’t stop coughing. This led to an embarrassingly loud exit about 30 minutes before the show was due to end. My seat made a noise as it banged back, and then I almost tripped over someone’s knees exiting my row of seats, because of course I was sat right in the middle. Fun.
(Why is there never enough room to manoeuvre yourself quietly and gracefully out of a theatre? Makes me wonder what would happen if a fire broke out… though the amount of smoke present would probably be the same).
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this show because I’ve already seen the film version of The Girl on the Train, and what’s the point of seeing a thriller you already know the ending to? But this one was great; set in London so there were no mangled American accents, and actually funny. It was just a shame I couldn’t stay to the end.
